Melusine’s character is based on medieval and chivalrous folk tales from the Middle Ages. Among various versions, the story has been told, in prose, by Jean d’Arras in “ The Noble History of Lusignans ” in 1393, then in 1401 by Coudrette: two stories retracing the glory of the Lusignan family once prestigious, against a backdrop of war Franco-English, reconquest of Poitou and impregnated with
the myth of the crusade. Two fairy tales doomed, from century to century, to uninterrupted success.
Other versions exist that sometimes differ but have the same end. The desperate flight of Melusine.
